New Moab HPC Suite 7.2 Available November 2012

The new Moab HPC Suite 7.2 release will help organizations accelerate productivity to meet their growing workload demands with optimized scheduling for Intel MIC co-processors, such as the new Xeon® Phi™, and dual-domain job scheduling for Cray systems. Additional productivity enhancements include automated periodic usage budget resets and streamlined RPM-based deployment that keep the focus on optimizing workload results.

 

Optimized scheduling and allocation for Intel® MIC coprocessors

As customers look to leverage the performance advantages of the new Intel Xeon® Phi™, they will need optimized scheduling and allocation for these Intel MIC co-processors to help speed application results while improving processor utilization and management.  The new Intel MIC support in 7.2 includes auto-detection of the location and availability of Intel MIC processors, without requiring manual admin configuration, as well as the ability to intelligently schedule specific jobs or job tasks to those processors.  Moab HPC Suite 7.2 will also enable policy-based scheduling of the accelerators based their key metrics to determine the optimal accelerator to use and which to avoid when scheduling a specific job. This reduces management effort and costs as MIC processors are introduced into an HPC system while ensuring their utilization is maximized to achieve accelerated job processing. The extended accelerator workload management support gives customers maximum choice in selecting the accelerators that work best for their workloads, whether Intel MIC, GPGPU or a hybrid environment of the two.

 

New dual-domain job scheduling for Cray Supercomputers

New dual-domain job scheduling in 7.2 speeds job submission and results for Cray customers by enabling users to schedule a single job to run simultaneously across both a Cray cluster and non-Cray compute nodes. Users no longer have to submit two separate jobs, wasting valuable time in du plicate submission and waiting to submit the dependent job to non-Cray domain resources. This is especially valuable for research and development jobs that may require different types of simulation analysis that are optimally run on the different types of compute nodes, such as multi-physics applications, but where the simulation results still need to interact with each other. This unique Moab HPC Suite capability was developed in innovation collaboration with Cray customers and they are already putting it use to deliver project results, discoveries and new product designs faster and easier.

 

New auto periodic usage allocation and budget resets across multiple users and groups

Moab HPC Suite 7.2 – Enterprise Edition offers a new periodic allocation reset capability for usage accounting that makes it easier for admins to manage recurring usage allocations and budgets that must be reset at regular intervals (month, quarter, etc.) with or without rollovers between periods.  This is required for accuracy in usage reporting because in many cases HPC system capacity and budget can’t be rolled over or extended; it is finite for any given period and needs to be tracked and allocated precisely by period to meet expectations and committments.  Automatically resetting the allocations and depositing new allocation budget amounts instantly at the start of each period gives users, organizations, and admins better transparency into what their system usage and available usage budget is for each period to support better planning and usage decisions in line with their usage limits. Admins can easily schedule these periodic allocation resets across multiple groups, organizations, and accounts using the accounting events scheduler, without wasting their valuable time doing manual updates and adjustments. This keeps admins focused on keeping the system optimized and at peak performance, not on being accountants. And the groups using the system always have immediate visibility and never have to wait for accurate reports to know if they are staying within their allotted usage budgets.

 

Streamlined RPM-based installation

The 7.2 release introduces streamlined, RPM-based installation of the end-to-end Moab HPC Suite.  This makes deployment faster with fewer steps and less time required from admins to successfully get Moab up, running and optimizing the environment.  The RPM install packages automate the proven, standardized install processes for all Moab HPC Suite components, including software dependencies.
