PHOTO – Virtualization Technology: VMworld 2012 Highlights Progress in Virtualized Networks, Phones, Cloud

More than 20,000 developers, enterprise IT corporate representatives, analysts, journalists and various other industry folks are crowding San Francisco’s Moscone Center this week for the ninth annual VMWorld conference. While there hasn’t been any blockbuster news such as mergers and acquisitions or radical new products, VMware is on the verge of a changeover in the CEO’s office—from Paul Maritz to Pat Gelsinger—and there are quite a few important product announcements. Virtually everybody who is anybody in the virtual data center world is on site this week. VMware led the news with announcements about its vCloud Suite, Horizon initiative, Cloud Operations Forum and others. Parent company EMC and its spinoff VCE showed off vBlock storage arrays. With its Horizon Mobile technology, VMware announced that it can now run a work phone as a virtual instance on an employee’s personal smartphone that it will run on Apple iOS devices as well as those running the Google Android OS.
