Adaptive Computing to Manage Computing Workloads for High-Performance Computing in Baden-Württemberg

  • Adaptive Computing’s Moab HPC Suite to Benefit Five HPC Clusters in Southwestern Germany
  • Moab, Adaptive Computing’s Patented Workload Management Technology, Optimizes HPC Environments

Leipzig, Germany (June 17, 2013) – Adaptive Computing, the largest provider of policy-based optimization software for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and private cloud environments, today announced at ISC 2013 in Leipzig, Germany, it will manage computing workloads in the Baden-Württemberg High Performance Computing Competence Centers (bwHPC), funded to a large part by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) in Baden-Württemberg. Using its Moab HPC Suite, Adaptive Computing will automate the scheduling, management, monitoring, and reporting of bwHPC’s workloads on a distributed supercomputing system. The system will have an estimated 6,500 processors socket in five clusters upon completion.  Adaptive Computing will be demonstrating its Moab HPC Suite during ISC 2013 in booth #500.

The five HPC clusters in Baden-Württemberg, a state of Germany located in the southwestern part of the country, will leverage Adaptive Computing’s technology to support their state-wide advanced scientific research in a variety of fields, including bioinformatics, neuroscience, computational chemistry, high-energy physics and systems biology. The first phase of the bwHPC environment, which includes the universal cluster (bwUniCluster) and two clusters for specific research communities (bwForCluster), will be installed in 2013/2014, with the two remaining specific research clusters targeted for completion over the next two years.

“Moab will help this undertaking realize its full potential,” said Achim Streit, Ph.D., professor and director at the Steinbuch Centre for Computing at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where at first the bwUniCluster will be installed. “In addition to helping us achieve maximum resource efficiency, Moab also enables us to ensure a uniform interface for the user base of the five clusters and tailor these individual systems to the needs of our specific communities.”

Moab HPC Suite is Adaptive Computing’s intelligent workload management software, which optimizes scheduling and management across workloads and resources based on policies. Accelerating results delivery and maximizing utilization, Moab HPC Suite simplifies workload management across complex, heterogeneous HPC cluster environments. It leverages multi-dimensional policies to continually schedule and monitor workloads, resources, service-level agreements (SLAs) and priorities to optimize workload output.

“We look forward to playing an integral role in advancing these research endeavors by helping the bwHPC team accomplish more work in less time, and in the right priority order.  As part of the agreement, Adaptive is extending the same purchasing terms to all Universities within the State to ensure continued research advancements,” said Rob Clyde, CEO of Adaptive Computing. “Across the world, Moab is an invaluable resource for the most scale-intensive and complex HPC environments because of its battle-tested ability to efficiently and intelligently manage workloads.”
